A Grandchild's Love Quells the Demons of Addiction

For 17 unholy years, Mary Woods, 56, called the streets of Manhattan her home. Crack cocaine was her sustenance, prostitution her trade. That all changed in 2009, when an arrest for the criminal sale of a controlled substance put a more permanent roof above her head: that of a jail cell on Rikers Island.

LGBT Homeless Youth Struggle to Survive on the Streets

"This life, it gets depressing," said Marks, a soft-spoken 19-year-old who goes by the name Diamond. In the last year, she had experienced periods of homelessness, sleeping at a park, friends' places and shelters after fighting with her mother over a number of issues, including her romantic interest in men and her gender identity.

His predilections and effeminate mannerisms caught the constant notice of classmates, and even relatives, who admonished him and called him names. "I was the clown,"he said. " 'John John's going to come over and make us laugh.' That was my role. Until I found drugs."
